BACKGROUND:
From Atlantic Cigar Co:
“The blend is a medium-plus in flavor and highlighted by a sweetened and floral tobacco flavor along with notes of cocoa and cedar. Created by Isaias Santana Diaz and Andres Leon, with the line produced at the famed Tabacos de Costa Rica, the “house of super premium cigars” is produced like Atabey. As part of the production process, the cigars undergo a 120-day aging process in the aging rooms, and then another 120 days in Spanish cedar boxes. The new line features a blend that is based on 5-year-aged tobacco fillers grown in the regions of Jalapa, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. The wrapper is an Ecuadorian Habano claro leaf, while the binder comes from the Dominican Republic.
THE WHOLE MEGILLAH:
The wrapper smells delicious with aromas of dark chocolate, caramel, malt, melted butter, floral, honey, and barnyard.
The cigar has a nice weight. The draw is wide open. My PerfecDraw finds solace in a dark clearing near the entrance to my cave.
As Jim Carrey would say, ‘Tasty.’ An instant sense of the advertised aging. Flavors of sweet nutmeats, creaminess, black pepper, chocolate, toffee, and cinnamon are immediate.
Strength is a peppery medium.
A honey/butter element sits atop the profile that gives it a lovely fireside warmth.
I’m impressed with this blend’s start. Pretty damn good for an $11 stick. Can it keep it up? I’m the wrong guy to ask.
I read someone describing their cigar experience as smoking for ‘almost’ 8 years. It’s OK. No one is counting. I gave up using the word ‘almost’ decades ago. I’m dying on the vine here.
An inch in and a remarkable richness occurs that sets the stage for a pleasant journey.
Kiwi, honey, toffee, nuts galore, creaminess, chocolate. There is no end to the subtle flavors. When aging is done right, it shines. The blenders did us a solid in creating an Atabey-like experience for only a sawbuck, or less. Can’t beat that.
Never understood the holes in the knees trend for jeans. Men look ridiculous. But it is mostly women that wear them. From my perspective, those holes need to move up a couple feet and there would be peace in the world.
2” burned. 25 minutes. The strength continues to hover at medium.
No idea why I still do this. I must like the attention.
2001. As I saw the ground swelling in my vision during that last 100 feet, I thought in that split second this was it. It wasn’t. But it sure hurt like hell digging that 10-foot tunnel with my head. Things were so peaceful at 13,000 feet.
This fucker is smooth. A smooth fucker. Fucking smooth. I’ve used my allotment. I’m only allowed to say fuck three times. I fucked up.
How can you live your life to the fullest without the use of swear words. Dunno.
Jimmy Vaughan asked me up to jam. Now I live in Milwaukee.
Construction is solid. The burn line is the sacrament. I genuflected as I wrote that.
Fat notes of creamy chocolate, creamy butter, creamy caramel, and creamy peanut butter. I prefer almond butter.
3” burned. Strength makes its move. The room begins to spin like coming on to shrooms. Yucca Valley at night was a fun place to be high.
A quick glance as citrus looms large. I loomed large so I went on a diet…badda boom.
I began using Hungry Root for food deliveries. The perfect place to get mass quantities for the lazy.
As a VIP member with Atlantic Cigar, this cigar’s price point is ridiculous. If a boutique brand can sell you a reasonably priced, gorgeously aged cigar blend like this, what does that say for those charging you $15-$20 for non-aged cigars.
Very complex era of this cigar’s life. Strength is medium/full but about to cross the full tilt threshold. The transition is oh so smooth. I think I love Diaz and Leon.
The halfway point sees the strength blast a crater in my puny brain. Must have been an errant missile. “Trouble Town.” Bonamassa.
Honey makes its move. Creamy chocolate covered orange follows. Black walnuts create a slight savory note allowing the balance to slip into place.
Generally, I don’t care for big cigars like this double corona. The aged tobacco is pulling its weight giving this blend the intensity I normally find in a corona gorda or corona.
I remember my psychotherapist falling asleep while I was venting. Made me wish I had more interesting problems.
4” burned. We have a flavor bomb. A laundry list of subtle notes excels at coating my palate with aplomb, or a nectarine. Sorry. Meanwhile, the strength is making my cerebral cortex twitch.
Slamming my head into the ground at 30mph caused no damage. How could I know that my need for writing about cigars would be the aftermath.
Generalissimo Franco is still dead.
A swarm of nuttiness takes the lead. Pronounced ‘leed.’ I refuse to rhyme.
Big smile on my puss. In 2010, I used that term in a review for an online cigar seller. My boss was an immigrant and read me the riot act for using a profanity. Look at me now.
Great fucking cigar.
