This was merely a short that I recorded so I could send it to friends who asked how I was adapting to my new electric upright. I have no idea who is watching this.
Reality Check: A squirrel shitting on an a/c unit is getting millions of views.

    • Hey Donovan,

Thanks, man. It is just a small Boss bass practice amp with two 5″ speakers. It is fine for my bass guitars when I’m playing in my man cave. But for this big bruiser, it really doesn’t cut it. It can’t take the drive from the huge upright strings.
My days of Marshall stacks and Ampeg rigs are behind me. So today, I ordered a Peavey MAX 208 200-Watt Bass Amp Combo. Not very big but plenty punchy enough for small spaces and even small gigs.
It will be here in time for when I open up on Week #2 of my next short video. I may not post each foray weekly on my blog, but I will post it on YouTube to keep track of my progress. It’s been 10 years since I played an upright and it is a whole different mindset along with fingering techniques not the same as a bass guitar.

      Thanks for your comment,
      Phil

      See reply to Donovan.
It will be punchier with the new combo amp. My 1975 Dobro electric upright was a great bass. I lucked out when I accidentally found the luthier at McCabe’s Guitar Shoppe, in Long Beach California, who designed it. Only 12 were produced. Jazz legend Ray Brown bought one. He quit Dobro because they went cheap on the finished product when it was released 50 years ago. I bought it in 1990 in the musician classifieds in Penny Saver. He promised to trick it out so it matched his original design. It cost, in 2025 dollars, $1500 to upgrade it.
But…my new Ibanez sweeps the floor with that relic. Wait till you hear it the way I hear it in my headphones. I shall be sitting on the curb outside waiting for the Peavey to arrive on Sunday.

    Rating: 96

Rating: 100 May seem expensive for 18 seconds of enjoyment, but will vastly improve with 3 months naked-optional 8 hour nightly rest and fine-tuning the setup.
