Today we take a look at the Headlines First Edition Cigars. The Antillian Cigar Corp. has become distributor for a bunch of different blends and you can now buy directly from their web site. Arby Sosa told me that all Sosa blends are available.
Plus they have a small collection of other name brand cigars for sale.
Arby has graciously afforded my readers a 5% coupon code: Katman5. You must put that in the comment section at checkout.
ADDENDUM (9-25-14): A PROBLEM OCCURRED YESTERDAY WITH THE COUPON CODE NOT WORKING ON THE ANTILLIAN SITE. THAT HAS BEEN RECTIFIED. YOU ARE GOOD TO GO.
I want to thank Arby Sosa for the samples. In the last year, I’ve reviewed 6 Sosa blends. Have a look.
There is a Headlines Second Edition that is coming out next week.
The cigar has a very gimmicky cigar band with the front page of a newspaper. I have to admit it is clever. It is well done and not a half assed approach.
The cigar is gorgeous. I love mottled cigars. This one is mottled up the wazoo. It is a beautiful natural tobacco leaf brown (aged of course), with fairly tight seams, lots of small veins with a couple tree trunks floating around in there….a sloppy triple cap and a nice oily sheen. The stick is very toothy.
I clip the cap and find aromas of spice, herbal notes, gobs of cocoa, ginger, strong cedar, a dash of leather, and coffee.
Time to light up.
Easy draw. And then a wallop of red pepper and creaminess at once. It hit flavor bomb status by the third puff.
This is a first for me. The sweet spot is hit within 30 seconds of lighting up.
The burn line is on target. The strength starts out at medium/full.
The spicy red pepper finds a curry component. Nice.
Flavors are zinging past my palate like me running out of Teri’s closet when her parents came home unexpectedly.
The ash is very flaky as it crumbles while putzing around with taking a photo.
The nougat is very upfront. There is a rich earthiness that is impressive. The flavor profile is just going nuts.
I’ve had the samples less than a week. I did dry box them for 48 hours and then took a couple out of the humidor the night before to make sure they were nice and dry. No excess moisture is my motto.
The strength hangs tough at medium/full.
Smoke is pouring from this stick like a house ‘a blazin’.
I approach the second third. And the intensity, potency, and nuance of the flavors are just incredible. It is deeply complex now. It has perfect balance and a finish a mile long.
I love this cigar. If it were not for the generosity of Arby Sosa, I may not have found out about this cigar for some time.
I know I’ve said this before, but I don’t remember experiencing such a flavor intense cigar in ages.
There is absolutely no break in the flavor profile. It continues to get stronger and stronger. A new flavor is added: Caramel. Now we have a candy bar. With the creaminess, cocoa, coffee, nougat, sweetness and lemon…it is just explosive with French pastry design.
I have two more of the Headlines First Editions and they won’t make it past today. They will be consumed.
The price point. Ridiculous for a blend this exotic and plentiful. This could have easily been an $8-$9 stick. If I had the dough, I’d buy a box.
I have one criticism. The cigar band has way too much glue on it. I had to cut it off with my X-Acto blade. It has a large overlap making it impossible to carefully remove it by hand.
I can honestly say that in all my years of cigar smoking, I have never had a cigar come storming out of the starting gate as a flavor bomb. Never.
I forgot to mention something very important. The blend comes in Habano and Maduro. I would love to try the Maduro next. Both blends are the same price.
The Headlines First Edition is so intriguing that I’ve forgotten to sip on my Atkins shake this entire time.
Because I have diabetes, the Atkins shake normalizes my blood sugar instantly. Our blood sugar is at its lowest when we wake up in the morning which is why they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
I am back now. Just gulped down half a shake. There. I can feel my blood surging now. LOL.
I am at the hallway mark now. Nothing has changed. Every flavor is still there and in the same order. But I take it back about nothing has changed….the complexity is more lush now. I swear I am smacking my lips like my loyal companion, Ebba (Our boxer).
The char line has been a bit wavy at times but has not needed a single touch up.
Tomorrow, I will review the other sample that Arby sent me: Doña Nieves. The price for a Nievita (5.5 x 50) is $5.88 by the box of 24. This stick has an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and fillers.
The Headlines First Edition comes in three sizes: Page 1/5.5 x 60($7.65), Page 2/6 x 54 (Torpedo-$7.20), and the Page 3/ 6 x 50 Toro($6.75). These are all box prices. A 5 pack is the same price of $37.50.
Remember, Arby has provided a 5% discount by using the coupon code Katman5 when you put it in the comment section. And free shipping is included.
The last third begins.
The strength moves to full.
I grab my new Cigar Clip (Which can be bought at CI) and slip the Headlines First Edition right in.
This has been a delightful cigar experience. To be perfectly frank, I had feared that the gimmicky cigar band might be hiding the fact that the cigar is mediocre. How wrong I was.
The Headlines First Edition finishes perfectly without heat or harshness.
Sosa Cigars and the rest of the Antillian Cigar Corp. list of blends can all be purchased at their web site.
Besides the new El Galan, Cigar Cork, headlines, Doña Nieves, and the large selection of Sosa cigars, the site sells another 8 brands you are all familiar with. Even La Jugada, Arandoza Red, Padron, 7-20-4, and others.
The Headlines First Edition was a great cigar and I look forward to reviewing the new Headlines Second Edition when it comes out next week.
