Once in a Lifetime Post: Reviewing the Reviewer: “Katman Kwoteables” | Cigar Reviews by the Katman

After all these years, it’s finally our turn.

God knows—for Phil’s benefit, Yahweh—how many cigars Phil Katman Kohn has reviewed, poking, squeezing, sniffing, dissecting and occasionally even smoking them between stories that had absolutely nothing to do with the cigar at hand.

Now, with Phil apparently winding down the Katman cigar asylum and preparing to ride off into retirement—or collapse face-first into his keyboard—I think it’s time for us to review the reviewer.

Not his palate. Not his scores. Not whether he correctly identified Ecuadorian binder from Nicaraguan ligero.

Screw that.

I want to review the stuff that made me laugh out loud.

Not chuckle. Not smile knowingly at some clever turn of phrase. I mean the involuntary laugh that causes your wife—the only sane person left in the room—to look across at you and wonder if you’re off your meds again.

And trying to explain Katman only makes it worse. Every word digs the hole a little deeper until you realize you’re no longer explaining Phil—you’re just providing evidence for your own competency hearing.

So here are a few of my nominations for the Katman Kwoteables Hall of Fame.

“Others write about relevant shit. I ramble on incessantly.”
Possibly the most accurate self-review ever written.

Then there is:
“The flavor profile expands like a mushroom cloud over Cleveland. Thankfully, my third wife lives there.”
Two sentences. Cigar analysis, nuclear annihilation and an ex-wife. A stunning display of efficiency from a man who normally needs 1,500 words, three ex-wives and a prostate exam to get from the cold draw to the first inch.

And then there is the merkin story.
Phil announces that his toupee has come loose, followed immediately by his merkin, which naturally reminds him of a girlfriend from the early ’70s. A beautiful girl with long brown hair who apparently possessed enough additional hair below the equator to require “a miner’s cap and klieg lights.”

His recommendation?
Skip the salon and “go straight to a dog groomer.”
“She had no sense of humor. Never saw her again.”
Of course she didn’t, Phil.

And remember, we were reading a cigar review.

That one is just batshit—and perfectly Katman. There are very few non-institutionalized people capable of starting with a loose toupee, transitioning seamlessly to a merkin, arriving at a hairy girlfriend from 50 years ago and a dog groomer, and then somehow finding their way back to combustion characteristics.

You don’t read Katman looking for the shortest distance between two points.

You get on the fucking bus and see where it goes.

Then there is one of my all-time favorites:
“There might be some wood. I lick my belt to confirm I taste leather.”
That may be the finest review of cigar reviewing ever written.

Somewhere another reviewer is swirling smoke around his palate and detecting Madagascar vanilla, wet forest floor and the faint memory of his grandmother’s spice cabinet.
Phil is licking his belt.
Reviewer reviewed: Katman wins.

And then:
“The cigar is packed like a schnitzel at a nuclear plant.”
I have absolutely no idea what that means.
Yet somehow I know exactly how tightly that cigar was packed.

That is the peculiar genius of Katman.

For years we supposedly came for the cigars. Instead, we heard about wives, ex-wives, medical catastrophes, bodily functions, childhood memories, rock and roll, the Three Stooges, Eddie Munster, Boy Scouts, syncope, aneurysms, unfortunate romantic encounters, the occasional Curved Air name-drop and whatever other synaptic misfire occurred between lighting the cigar and reaching the final third.

Somewhere in there, occasionally, Phil reviewed the cigar.
So now we reverse the roles.
The readers review the reviewer.

Phil once called us his “cult following of smart weirdos.” Eventually the asylum got a name: Katmandia.
Seems about right.

So, citizens of Katmandia, dig through your memory—or better yet, dig through the old reviews—and post the Katman line, story, paragraph or completely unhinged detour that made you lose it.

The one that made you spit out your coffee.

The one you read to your wife even though you knew halfway through that this had been a terrible decision.

The one that made you wonder how the hell Phil got there from a discussion of wrapper combustion.

And especially the one that made you think:
Only Katman could write this shit.

Let’s give the old bastard his performance review before he retires.

No HR department. No 360-degree feedback. No improvement plan. At this point, improvement would ruin him.

Just the Great Katman Kwoteable Collection, assembled by the smart weirdos who have spent years wandering around Katmandia reading this magnificent nonsense.

Phil reviewed the cigars.
Now it’s our turn to review Phil.

So rise to the occasion, Katmandians.
What’s your favorite Katman Kwoteable?

Katman here; Trillionaire, Jeff Diaz wrote this mini manifesto.
I don’t believe for a minute that I wrote any of that stuff.

I am really uncomfortable posting this because I am very shy. Sure, I may drop names, but I squirm at praise.

Fuck it…beat me daddy, eight to the bar…

Kwote me…if you dare. And I will reward one or more of you with a Trojan gondola full of clitoris stampings and vulva engravings…and a few cigars.

P.S. Fortunately, Jeff is allowing me to make payments.

  1. I only just started reading Katmans reviews a couple months ago, but i like the cut of his gib and will be sad to see them go!

  2. “The second half is smoother and much more flavorful. There is just enough mild complexity that it is hard not to huff and puff constantly. I tangle my smoking hand with twines I found in the litter box. I believe they’re twines.

I’ve got Porn Hub on in Farsi. The women are wearing burkas. I feel dirty.

Why is it that in movies and tv series, people aren’t afraid to walk barefoot in men’s bathrooms. Apparently, the producers have only used private bathrooms when their bosses were at lunch. The leftist elite.

I love the creaminess. This very much reminds me of something that AJ would blend.”

This for a cigar named Your Mom. I promptly bought a fiver. Your reviews will be missed Katman. Enjoy retirement!

  3. This phrase clearly sticks with me and probably always will,

    “…curious, like a chimp with a suppository….”

Milton, Plato, Dickinson, Katman…. wordsmiths all.

You will be sorely missed and fondly remembered Phil. Be’hatzlacha!

  4. I think this was used multiple times “The draw is as tight as my dick’s hatband” It always reminds me of my dad and his friends using this on a regular basis. Had a baseball coach when in elementary school and he would use it when he thought I was too nervous and had no idea what he meant. I started following you a couple of years ago but frequently check older reviews for the entertainment factor. Best of luck, you will be missed.

  8. “As I visit cigar social media, I am perplexed by the number of in the moment cigar photos in which the cap is soaked with a gummy substance emitted from the endower’s loose lips. I don’t enjoy looking at that and yet Likes are made with careless abandon. Is it an unwritten rule that no one says anything? If I want to stare at the wet end of a dark tubular object, I can always type ‘black cocks’ into DuckDuckGo.”

Where else can you find such scholarly observations? You I’ll be missed Katman!

  9. There’s no one quote, it’s the whole lot. The command of language, the off center humor, the war stories, the camaraderie. The cigar reviews are an added bonus. Phil, I’ll miss ya buddy.

  12. This one recently caught my eye as I wanted to re-visit Phil’s review on a certain Diesel stick that I was considering purchasing. In the review he said:

“I don’t usually force the ash off the mother ship but when I am writing, my naughty bits are totally exposed. I’m too old to have emergency personnel tending to a genital burn. In 2016, I had a physical meltdown and spent 5 days in ICU. The only thing I remember is on that first day, I needed a catheter up my wiener so I could pee. Naturally, three 25-year-old pretty female nurses came in to do the deed. First, it hurts. Second, three 25-year-old female nurses. I’d rather they’d have just pulled the plug”

First off, as a 70+ year old male, you will likely at some point encounter a catheter up your schlong; and nowadays, it’s most likely going to be inserted by a pretty, 20’s something-year-old, attractive female nurse technician. On a recent urologist visit, I encountered one of these young, attractive nurse technicians. She was on my short list to see to figure out why I was having problems with my willie. Before beginning “the procedure” I noticed a sign on the wall of her exam room that simply said: “Relax! Urine good hands!”

Phil, even though I’m a new subscriber I’ve followed your reviews for several years. While our cigar palates don’t match 100% you have led me to numerous good buys and helped me avoid some dreck. Be well in your “retirement” from blogging. Will there be any archive to your cigar reviews or will we have to find another “Stooge” to help us?

“To be honest, I’d rather stop writing and just kick back and enjoy the rest of the cigar with my feet up while Sammy the Cat gives me a BJ.”

  14. Katman’s gonzo-style writing is second to none. I will miss him greatly. I’ve had many laughs and thoughtful pauses over the years reading his reviews but I have no idea how to find those quotes now. All I can do is hope for the reunion tour in 5 years!

  16. From the Alma del Campo review:

Ever try to empty that sac of goo from your dog’s ass like the groomers or vets do? And then the goo splatters all over you?

    Me neither.

I tasted Milk Bones for a week.

Phil, many thanks for the unhinged hilarity; not to mention introducing me to a number of terrific cigars. I’ve bought boxes of unknowns (to me) on your recommendations and loved every one. Enjoy retirement, you’ve earned it!

  17. I revisited this one because it stopped me in my reading track to imagine what the hell kind of analogy Phil is making.
“The second half continues the saga of a great blend. Flavors were canonized during inch 2. The width and breadth widens to envelop my palate the way marmots smell Japanese used panties machines. The RML is better.”
Man I hope Saka reads these. Haha. Included in this particular review is deep incite to the trajectory of The Three Stooges careers. Why I keep coming back, those of us that love cigars but find reviews boring marketing ploys.
