“440C stainless steel is considered by many to be the premier metal for most types of blades. Hardness and corrosion resistance are the main keys to wear resistance, which means keeping that edge impeccably sharp over many years of daily use.
There are over 150 different grades of stainless steel, and heat-hardened 440C is the hardest of them all. But good things are always accompanied by bad things. When heat hardened to the maximum amount, it is nearly impossible to machine and sharpen fully hardened 440C stainless steel. That means higher cost of the metal, and far higher manufacturing costs. But it is definitely worth the cost and effort!”
